The Community Safety Unit is located in Millennium House in central Belfast. The CSU created in response to the community safety recommendations of the Criminal Justice Review. It was is a new division of the Criminal Justice Directorate of the Northern Ireland Office

The Community Safety Policy Branch is responsible for:
• Development, promotion and monitoring of a Community Safety Strategy for Northern Ireland;
• Relationships with other government departments and statutory bodies;
• Funding for projects through partnerships;
• Advice to Ministers on community safety issues;
• Secretariat for the Community Safety Advisory Council; and
• Management and publication of research and evaluation services.
Partnership Development Branch is responsible for:

• First hand assistance with partnership formation, community safety auditing and consultation and action planning;
• Publication of guidance materials
• Dissemination of best practice and project evaluation;
• Establishment and co-ordination of local practitioner networks;
• Co-ordination of a training strategy and servicing of a training sub group; and
• Development and establishment of accredited training programmes.

Crime Reduction and Voluntaries Branch is responsible for:
• Lead responsibility for key issues in the Community Safety Strategy in relation to crime reduction targets, business and retail crime, drugs and alcohol, violence against women;
• Liaison with other crime prevention bodies;
• Funding for crime reduction projects – regional;
• Advice to Ministers on crime reduction and crime prevention initiatives; and
• Relationships with and funding of Voluntary Organisations relating to criminal justice.
