The Handy Van Scheme - tackling older people's fear of crime
On 27 March 2006 the Criminal Justice Minister, David Hanson MP launched the first HandyVan scheme in Northern Ireland. The scheme which is an extension of the successful scheme running in Great Britain, is being managed by Help the Aged in partnership with the Community Safety Unit and Age Concern NI. It aims to improve security for vulnerable older people in the Greater Belfast area through the provision and fitting free of charge of a range of security and safety products.
The scheme has a fully fitted van and specially trained fitter and all the products installed comply with national standards.
Who can apply for the scheme?
Residents of the Greater Belfast area ie live within Belfast City Council, Newtownabbey Borough Council, Castlereagh District Council and Lisburn City Council who:
- Are aged 60 years and over
- Have less than £10,000 savings (excluding the value of their home)
- Are not paying income tax
How do I apply?
Applications can be made directly by the older person or by an agency on their behalf via the following methods:-
- Telephone 01255 47399 (by applicants only) - the HandyVan administrator will take your details and arrange a date for their local fitter to visit your home and assess/install the recommended security and safety equipment.
- Post or FAX - complete and return the referral form to the HandyVan Scheme
- Email the completed referral form to www.handyvan@helptheaged.org.uk
