The Northern Ireland Community Safety Strategy identifies
the need for research and evaluation in three key areas:
Local evaluations of programmes that have been found to be effective
in significantly different circumstances (such as North America);
Evaluation of programmes that have been inadequately evaluated elsewhere;
and
Long term evaluations of programmes aimed at reducing criminality.
Research
In its Strategy document, the Community Safety Unit has committed
itself to commissioning a review of the ‘what works’
literature for community safety. It is hoped that this will lead
to the provision of a searchable database of evaluated programmes
that will be easily accessible by community safety practitioners.
Evaluation
Evaluations is the process of assessing, at a particular point in
time, whether or not a project is achieving or has achieved its
objectives. The evaluation of CSU funded community safety projects
will be an on-going endeavour. As they become available, this section
will feature Evaluation Highlights of CSU funded projects.
