The Community Safety Unit, in consultation with the Community Justice National Training Organisation developed a Progression Award in Community Safety and an Introductory Certificate in Community Safety.

The Introduction to Community Safety course is designed to meet the needs of employers in community safety in Northern Ireland, and is endorsed by the Community Safety Unit. It is made up of two units from the Community Justice Progression awards, and successful candidates can go on to complete six further units to obtain a full Progression Award. The Progression award is a “Vocationally related qualification” at level 3, and provides access into Higher Education. The awarding body is City & Guilds, and successful candidates also receive a certificate of achievement from the Community Safety Unit.

In January 2004, the ‘Introduction to Community Safety’ course will be provided in five Further Education colleges. These are:

Belfast Institute for Further and Higher Education
Lisburn Institute
North Down and Ards Further Education
North West Institute of Further Education
